Libby Melton
In 2012, at the age of 84, Elizabeth “Libby” Milton completed a critical renovation to boost the health and well-being of children attending nursery school at Kingsley House. She assured them clean air. The reconstruction of the faltering air quality system at the historic New Orleans campus was a key project remaining after a $4.25 million capital improvement initiative launched under Libby’s supervision. Nationally recognized as a pioneer for community outreach and support, Libby manages many improvements at Kingsley House that will enhance its mission to educate children, strengthen families and build community for generations to come.
Libby came to Kingsley House looking for a satisfying job with real impact. Over time, she grew into the role of facilities maintenance, overseeing the upkeep of a complicated set of integrated buildings. During her 50 years devoted to Kingsley House, Libby learned to appreciate the value of roots – how people are likely to flourish in a place that is familiar and comfortable. She recognized the importance of New Orleans history and architecture, but she also sought a balance between preservation and practical usefulness. Important work is done at Kingsley House, from nursery school to adult day care. Libby worked to make the facilities function in support of the diverse programs that use it today.
The task included overseeing an antebellum cotton press-turned-gym and much newer structures, which together create a unified square around a shady, welcoming courtyard. Libby’s work enabled the center to not only reopen within three months after Hurricane Katrina, but to expand to accommodate additional need in a time when many other resource centers remained shuttered. Libby coordinates with all the program leaders on their construction needs, and she provides those who seek help with a warm, safe and stimulating environment in which they can reach their full potential.
Libby Milton… Peoples Health Champion.
