2025 Champions

Joe Mikes

He’s never forgotten the value of that help, the importance of community. And he’s been giving back for decades. From serving as an usher at his church (for 60+ years) to volunteering for programs that feed the hungry to organizing a volunteer group in support of the symphony, Joe has been tireless in his drive to help others.

He says: “If I live to 100, I still haven’t paid enough back.”

At the hospital, Joe sees people at what can be their most troubled times. So he tries to ease their stress, relax them with compassion and maybe a little humor.

“With age, you think more and more of what you can do,” he says. “I can still help people at this age. I’m still trying to make other people happy.”

He may say he’s “trying,” but making people happy seems to come so naturally to him. And you can tell from his smile that the volunteer work he is doing genuinely makes him happy.

That’s the outlook of a Champion. That’s why we celebrate Joe Mikes as a Peoples Health Champion.

I can still help people at this age. I’m still trying to make other people happy.”

If you think about it, you probably know a Champion.

A Champion may even be you. Nominate yourself or someone you know—like a relative, co-worker or neighbor—as a Peoples Health Champion.
